A decadent twist on the classic BLT featuring crispy bacon, fresh lettuce and tomato, creamy avocado, and gooey melted cheese.

# What You'll Need:

→ Bread & Dairy

01 - 4 slices sourdough or country white bread
02 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
03 - 4 slices cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

→ Meats

04 - 4 slices thick-cut bacon

→ Vegetables

05 - 1 ripe avocado, sliced
06 - 1 medium tomato, sliced
07 - 2 leaves romaine or butter lettuce

→ Condiments & Seasoning

08 - Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

# How-To Steps:

01 - Cook bacon slices in a skillet over medium heat until crispy, approximately 5-7 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain and cool slightly.
02 - Lightly butter one side of each bread slice, using approximately 0.5 tablespoon of softened butter per slice.
03 - Place two bread slices buttered side down on a work surface. Layer each slice with one slice of cheese, one piece of bacon, lettuce leaf, tomato slice, and avocado slice. Season avocado and tomato with salt and pepper to taste. Top with remaining cheese slice and bread slice, buttered side up.
04 - Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook until golden brown and cheese is melted, approximately 3-4 minutes per side. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even cooking and cheese melting.
05 - Remove sandwiches from skillet and allow to cool for 1-2 minutes. Slice each sandwich diagonally in half and serve immediately while warm.

# Expert Suggestions:

01 -
  • It takes everything great about a BLT and makes it warm, melty, and even more satisfying.
  • The creamy avocado against crispy bacon and gooey cheese is a texture combination that just works.
  • You can make it with whatever bread and cheese you have on hand.
  • It comes together in twenty minutes but tastes like you put in real effort.
02 -
  • If your heat is too high, the bread will burn before the cheese melts, keep it medium low and be patient.
  • Slice the avocado and tomato right before assembling so they stay fresh and do not turn brown or watery.
  • Press the sandwich gently as it cooks, but do not smash it flat or all the fillings will squeeze out the sides.
03 -
  • Use a cast iron skillet if you have one, it holds heat evenly and gives you the most consistent golden crust.
  • Let the butter come to room temperature so it spreads easily without tearing the bread.
  • If your avocado is not quite ripe, let it sit in a paper bag with a banana overnight to speed things up.
